UTV Use on City Streets

Statement Regarding City UTV Use:
As of Jan 1, 2024, Side-by-side UTV’s (Utility Terrain Vehicles) may be registered and driven on city streets under specific criteria. These criteria will be strictly enforced by the Ulysses Police Department.

  1. Vehicle Requirements
    1. Lighting:
      • Turn Signals
      • Spot/Fog Aux. Lamps
      • Tag Light
      • Tail Lamps
      • Stop Lamps
      • Headlamps
    2. Functional Equipment:
      • Brakes
      • Safety Belts
      • Horns and Warning Devices
      • Safety Belts
      • Mirrors
      • Rear Reflectors
  2. Area of operation – UTV’s may not be driven along state highways (Colorado St. and Oklahoma Ave.) but may cross over if necessary. 
  3. Driver/Passenger Restrictions -- UTV operators must be 18 years of age or older and possess a valid driver’s license. Passengers under 18 must wear a DOT approved helmet.
  4. UTV Registration -- UTV's must be insured, inspected by the Ulysses Police Department, and display a registration plate from the UPD, obtained at City Hall for a registration Fee of $75.
  5. Renewal -- Registration renewals will cost $75 and must be performed in January of subsequent years, regardless of the month that the initial registration is obtained. Failure to renew in January will prevent the UTV from being registered again until the following January.
  6. Receipt of paid taxes for UTV.
